What Fabric GSM Means for Activewear
GSM means grams per square metre. It describes the mass of a fabric area and is one of the most frequently discussed specifications in activewear sourcing. It is useful-but it is not a complete quality grade.
Two fabrics with the same GSM may have different thickness, density, stretch, surface texture and support. A heavier fabric can still become see-through under extension, while a well-constructed medium-weight knit may provide effective coverage.
What GSM can help indicate
When other variables are reasonably comparable, GSM can influence:
- perceived substance and weight;
- warmth and seasonal suitability;
- cutting and sewing behavior;
- material consumption and cost.
It does not independently prove softness, breathability, compression, recovery, pilling resistance or squat-proof performance.
GSM must be read with fabric structure
A compact interlock and a more open knit may share a similar weight but respond differently when stretched. Brushing can also make a fabric feel fuller without creating the same structural support as a denser knit.
For yoga leggings, buyers should review GSM together with thickness, knit density, stretch force, recovery and opacity. For tops and tanks, drape and breathability may matter more than maximum weight. For sports bras, the shell fabric is only one part of a support system that also includes lining, elastic and pattern.
Why color changes the decision
Pale colors often require closer opacity review than black or dark navy. Increasing GSM may help in some constructions, but it is not the only solution. Knit structure, yarn, dyeing, fit tension and lining strategy can be equally important.
How GSM should be controlled
Fabric weight can vary within production tolerances. Buyers and factories should agree on:
- the applicable test or measurement method;
- conditioning or sampling requirements where relevant;
- whether approval applies to each color or lot.
A single small reading should not be treated as a complete representation of a bulk roll. Fabric inspection and sampling plans should reflect the order and risk.
GSM and product positioning
Instead of asking "What is the best GSM?", buyers should ask:
- What activity is this style designed for?
- Is the target light, balanced or compressive?
- Will it be used in hot, temperate or cool conditions?
- Does the design include pockets, multiple panels or lining?
- What coverage and care performance are required?
Why Choose Us: How GENY YOGA Helps Buyers Reduce Risk
Geny Yoga develops multiple activewear categories, allowing fabric weight to be discussed in relation to the finished top, legging, short, pants, sports bra or tank-not as an isolated number.
Send Emma your target style, climate, fabric touch, compression level and reference GSM. Geny Yoga can help compare the specification with the intended garment before sampling.
