Activewear Sample Approval Checklist for Brand Owners
Approving a sample because it “looks good” is risky. Activewear must work in motion, recover after stretch and remain consistent through production. A useful approval process converts visual preference into clear, recordable requirements.
The following checklist helps brand owners organize sample comments before bulk production. Not every item applies to every style, but unanswered critical points should be resolved rather than assumed.
1. Product identity
- Style number and sample version are correct.
- Sample purpose is clear: development, fit, size set, pre-production or other.
- Tech pack revision and comment date are recorded.
- Reference sample and approved changes are identified.
2. Fabric
- Fiber content and construction match the brief.
- Weight, usable width and surface finish are acceptable.
- Hand feel and compression match the product position.
- Stretch and recovery are suitable by direction.
- Opacity is reviewed in the actual garment and color.
- Shrinkage, colorfastness and pilling requirements are defined where relevant.
- Fabric face and cutting direction are clear.
3. Color and appearance
- Garment color is compared with an approved standard.
- Main fabric, lining, thread, elastic, logo and trims coordinate as intended.
- Color is reviewed under consistent lighting.
- Light shades are checked for coverage.
- Surface shine, brushing or texture is acceptable.
4. Measurements and fit
- Key points of measure match the specification within agreed tolerance.
- Measurement method is understood by both parties.
- Waist, hip, rise, thigh, inseam and opening are reviewed.
- Garment is tested on the intended fit model.
- Fit is reviewed during bending, squatting and walking.
- Waistband does not roll, gape or slide excessively.
- Crotch and gusset allow intended movement.
- Grade rules or key additional sizes are reviewed where required.
5. Construction and workmanship
- Stitch and seam types match the tech pack.
- Stitching stretches adequately without breakage.
- No skipped stitches, needle damage or open seams.
- Thread tension and stitch density are balanced.
- Seams are smooth without unacceptable puckering or waviness.
- Left and right sides are symmetrical where intended.
- Stress points are reinforced.
- Raw edges and seam allowances are controlled.
6. Components and branding
- Elastic width, firmness and recovery are acceptable.
- Cups, lining, mesh, zippers and drawcords match the bill of materials.
- Logo method, dimensions, color and placement are correct.
- Main label, size label and care label information are approved.
- Labels do not create unacceptable skin irritation.
7. Wear and care review
- Garment performs in the intended activity.
- Seams and hems remain stable after movement.
- Required wash review or testing has been completed.
- No unacceptable twisting, shrinkage, color transfer or delamination is observed.
- Care instructions match the materials and decoration.
8. Packaging and commercial details
- Folding method and individual packaging are clear.
- Hangtags, stickers, barcodes and carton marks are approved.
- Size and color assortment is correct.
- Critical quality points for bulk inspection are documented.
Write actionable sample comments
Avoid comments such as “fit is wrong” or “make it better.” Identify the location, symptom and desired result. Include a photo, measurement or marked reference when useful.
Good example: “Reduce the relaxed waistband width by 1 cm on the half measurement and retain the approved waistband height.”
